Aeolian Yacht Club Membership Frequently Asked Questions

Misconceptions about joining a yacht club abound. Below are some frequently asked questions to help dispel myths and provide information about our Aeolian Yacht Club.

Question Answer
To join the Aeolian Yacht Club, do I need to own a yacht?
No. If you love water and enjoy participating in sport and leisure activities like rowing, kayaking, sailing, or powerboating at any level, Aeolian is a great place for you. In fact, Aeolian has a fleet of dinghies and a small sailboats for club members to use to better their skills and prepare for future boat ownership.

To join the Aeolian Yacht Club, must I have a roman numeral in my name?
Remember Thurston Howell III from Gilligan's Island? No need to be like him. We welcome all types of folks to join from many different walks of life. We look for people who respect each other and just want to have fun.

How much is the Aeolian Yacht Club membership fee?
You can't beat the Aeolian Yacht Club membership value. Given our long history and volunteer contribution of members, our dues include a low one time initiation fee of $500 and quarterly dues of $65 (72 cents a day). Berthing fees are also very reasonable.

I know no one at the club, but want to learn more first hand, what can I do?
Call or email our membership committee contact identified on our club officers page. They will help identify an event where you can drop in and experience Aeolian and meet our club members. Let our contact introduce you to a variety of members, and feel free to introduce yourself. Aeolians will gladly share their unique club experiences with you.

How can I join when I don't have two sponsors? Sponsorship is important at Aeolian as we give new members literally keys to our home. When visiting Aeolian and introducing yourself to members, get to know them and see what next events you can attend. This activity, along with letting people know you are looking for sponsorship, will enable you to become sponsored.

As a member, are there mandatory duties that I must complete?
The Aeolian Yacht Club has been around since 1906 solely on the shoulders of members that support club activities and maintain club grounds. Volunteering is encouraged, but not mandatory. A good rule of thumb is to consider how you use the club and what skills you can provide to determine what you can do to give back. Your support will contribute to our longstanding tradition and make the club a better place for all members.

I plan to take my boat to or berth at the Aeolian Yacht Club, but I hear it is difficult navigate to. Is this true?
This myth is driven by bridges and shallow water around Alameda that rarely effect navigating to the Aeolian. Bridges are very responsive to opening by calling the bridge tenders on VHF Channel 9. There are some minor restrictions during rush hour on weekdays, but that is about it. Check out this external bridge site for more information. As far as channel depth goes, there are only a few hours per 24 hour day where deep draft boats must wait for higher tide. Check out our navigation page for more information.
